SIM cards, eSIM and internet in Asia

Mobile data is cheap and fast across most of Asia, but the way you buy it varies.

Local SIM or eSIM

A local prepaid SIM bought at the airport is usually the cheapest option for a single country. An eSIM is more convenient for a multi-country trip, and can be set up before you land — but check your phone supports it and is not carrier-locked.

RegistrationMany countries require SIM cards to be registered against a passport. Buy from an official operator counter rather than a street stall, and keep the receipt.

Where access is restricted

A number of countries filter or block parts of the internet, including services travellers rely on for messaging and maps. Download offline maps and save your booking confirmations before you arrive.
